Harvard Alumni Association Offers High-End Educational Travel

With a new catalog offering trips from Timbuktu to  Antarctica, the program is an adventure in earned income.

The Harvard Alumni Association (a subsidiary of Harvard EIN 04-2103580 Form 990) is shifting its promotion of educational trips.  Once announced by individual brochures, the association is shifting to a catalog published three times a year.

Trips are what you might expect from Harvard in exotic locales.  The sixteen-day cruise  to Timbuktu on the yacht Callisto is led by Karel Liem, Curator of Ichthyology at Harvard.  The group is limited to 34 people.  After Timbuktu, the cruise travels the Casamance, Saloum, and Gambia rivers. Prices range from $9,495 to $11,395.

The Antarctica tour on Corinthian II is led by Prof. A. W. Crompton, a professor of natural history, heading up a team of naturalists and lecturers.  It's fourteen days from December 30 to January 12, 2007, with trips to shore on Zodiacs to see penguin rookeries and to navigate among ice floes.  Priced from $7,995 to $14,995 with 114 slots. 

The more erudite and less adventuresome might appreciate the Tuscan Villa Literary Retreat, 9 days and 8 nights in Villa Casalecchi, located between Florence and Siena.  Days are spent walking in the footsteps of Dante, Boccacio, and Petrarch with Lino Pertile, Professor of Romance Languages.  Price for this one is a mere $4,295.

Or consider a wellness retreat in Eugénie-les-Bains in France, for six days of spa treatments followed by a trip to Bayonne to sample their chocolate.   Professor Susan Suleiman, professor of the civilization of France, leads this group of thirty.  Just $5,995.

And this is just four of the eighty or so trips listed on the web site. 

Of course, for the rest of those in that empty-nester travel demographic who are looking for more than a bus tour, there's always Elderhostel (EIN 04-2632526 Form 990).

２日夜に盛岡市を出たコンテナは３日午前、相次いで東京貨物ターミナル駅に到着。フォークリフトでトラックに積み替えられ、各地の処理施設に向かった。このうちコンテナ１個が搬入された大田区の処理施設では、重機や手作業で金属などの不燃物が分けられ、可燃物は燃やしやすいように破砕された。がれきには、木材や木くずに加え、布団やネクタイ、ぬいぐるみなど、津波で流されたとみられるさまざまな生活の品が泥にまみれて交ざっていた。

ティンバーランド１２日に判明した政府の社会保障分野の一体改革素案（骨子案）は、来年の法案提出を検討してきた受診時定額負担制度の見送りを容認するなど、負担増を先送りしようとする民主党の主張に大幅に譲歩する内容となった。公務員の特権に切り込むことが期待された被用者年金一元化でも、公務員の優遇措置の存続に道を開く文言が盛り込まれた。「公平な負担」を旗印とした社会保障改革の看板は大きくゆがみつつある。

　ティンバーランド骨子案は、病院を訪れるたびに患者が１００円を上乗せして支払う受診時定額負担制度について「（導入見送りを掲げた）民主党ワーキングチームの報告を踏まえる」と記した。７０～７４歳の窓口負担の２割への引き上げでは「平成２４年度の対応については調整」と、その後の引き上げに含みを残したが、党側の猛反発で撤回に追いやられるのは確実な情勢だ。
