Challenging a huge, unexpected bequest on a technicality, Salvation Army succeeds in reducing Greenpeace share by $6 million.
The LA Times (Tomas Alex Tizon) reports that the Salvation Army (EIN 13-3485289 church, no Form 990) has settled its dispute with Greenpeace (details in a bit) over a share of a $264 million estate left by Hector Guy Di Stefano, whose late wife was the daughter of an early employee of United Parcel Service.
The SA had argued that the bequest, which was to Greenpeace International (EIN 52-1195467), was forfeit because that organization had been dissolved, which is confirmed by its 2005 Form 990 identifying it as a final return. The successor organization, Greenpeace Inc., a 501(c)(4) business league (EIN 52-1541501 Form 990) argued that the intent of the donor was clear, and that the Greenpeace share should go to the Greenpeace Fund, its 501(c)(3) charitable affiliate (EIN 95-3313195 Form 990).
The case was still in mediation when it was settled, with Greenpeace agreeing to $26 million rather than the $33 million that would have been its proportionate share. If the balance was distributed equally, that means that the SA picked up close to a million dollars for its pains. Score one for the militant wing of the Salvation Army. But Greenpeace retains the edge on naval power.
In any event, a glance at the Form 990s shows that the combined income of the Greenpeace organizations was $23.5 million, considerably less than the bequest. The investments held by the fund amounted to about $3 million. Thus even this reduced bequest represents a huge boost for the organization.
Great, the inside of the many I expect things. Thank you to let me share the joy. Finally I wish you good health, success in work!

Tierney says that larger scale organizations would have access to other resources, which I suspect means that they pay for consulting services from Bain at the going rate. Bridgespan's Form 990 reports that the company operates with consultants borrowed from Bain & Company, which continues to pay their salaries while on loan.
